How to translate Shopify page URLs?

Do you have an international e-commerce site on Shopify? Good idea! But you may have noticed that each version of the site has the same URLs.

Indeed, on many Shopify sites, we can see:

monsiteamoi.ndd/fr/url-en-francais

And

monsiteamoi.ndd/en/url-en-francais

This is a real problem for Shopify site SEO and for Internet users. It can give the impression of a site that is barely or not finished and therefore tarnish the customer experience.

Good news! Since a Shopify update, during one of the famous "Summer Edition" or "Winter Edition", it is possible to translate Shopify handles, URLs, products and collections. Let's see together how to do it.

How to translate handles in Shopify?

So, in order to carry out translations, you must have a translation application.

1) Install a Shopify translation app

There are many paid ones, but also free ones. We'll use Shopify's app to demonstrate. It's simply called Shopify Translate & Adapt and is available for free here .

Once installed in your Shopify site, this application will allow you to automatically translate all or part of your site via Google Translate but also to add URLs in English, French, Spanish and others.

2) Go to the app and choose a language

Once installed, you can go to the app and select it to open it

3) Choose the object to translate

Now it's time to translate the handle. To do this, go to the object to be translated: a collection, a product, etc. and choose it. You will arrive on a page like this with the information.

You see "URL Anchor", this is what you need to translate the URL into all the languages of your store. By default this will use the same content as the basic site (French or English in most cases).

Remember to save at the top right and voila, you're done.
