To boost your SEO traffic, nothing better than content, links and a quality site.
These are the 3 fundamental pillars of natural referencing and for 20 years, this has not changed much unlike the Google algorithm.
But when you manage an e-commerce site, there are bound to be issues around these points. Today, we are going to see how to add content to Shopify category pages. Because it's not a secret du seo but the content is an asset for good referencing!
Moreover, we should not speak of category pages but rather of collection pages since it is "the official term" of Shopify.

So how to boost the referencing in Google, bing, Yandex or other of its collection pages without penalizing the ux (ergonomics) of your site?
Demonstration.
Why add text to collection pages?
First of all, why be interested in the collection pages? Well, you have to see that the SEO of collection pages is often a good deal in terms of traffic.
Indeed, collection pages often target keywords with higher traffic than product pages. To ignore it would be beginner's seo mistake !
For example, we can imagine that the "iphones" collection represents more traffic than "iphone 13".
The "Rayban sunglasses" collection will receive more traffic than the model numbers.
With rare exceptions, having well-placed collections can therefore bring massive traffic to your site. So sales if the products are in stock and at the right price.
Is a description text not enough?
Generally, we therefore add in Shopify, but the advice is valid for any e-commerce solution, a collection description text that will be displayed at the top of the page.
If the text is a bit long, which can be the case with SEO-oriented texts, then the products may end up a little too low for conversion.
And if the text is at the bottom, then it is less interesting for Google.
The solution is to have two texts! a fairly short top and a second longer bottom that can express all the creativity of your seo agency.
But what about in Shopify when there is only one description text field for collections? You have to use metafields!
Use collection metafields to display second text.
As there will be two texts, one will be managed in the metafield, another in the collection description field.
It is up to you to choose where the text is located. For this example we will add the text "metafield" at the bottom of the collection page.
For this you need:
- a application shopify gratuite as metafield Guru
- A 2.0 theme will be better (Dawn is perfect for that)
- Some html/css skills but nothing rocket science.
Note: if you don't have a 2.0 theme yet then contact us to perform a migration. If you are afraid of doing something stupid by making changes to the Shopify code then contact us, it's our job
First step: save your theme!
Before making any changes to the code, remember to save your theme. It's simple, here you click on "online store" then on the "Actions" button and "Duplicate".
Wait on this page for the theme to duplicate, about 30 to 40 seconds.
Then click on "edit code"
In the small search engine, you can search for "main-collection-product-grid.liquid" , once the file is open, look for the line with "{% schema %} and add the following code just before:

Save (green button top right)
Congratulations, you have just added your first metafield to your Shopify store!
Add SEO content in metafields
Now, we will have to fill this field dynamically. To do this, go to the Metafield Guru app (or any other metafield management app).
The management of metafields is indeed not yet supported for collections in Shopify settings. But it's coming soon.
In metafield Guru, go to Collection, select the collection of your choice and create the metafield with the following information:
- Type : multi line text
- Namespace : seo
- Key : desc
- value: Your SEO long description text of this collection

And There you go ! You just have to do this for each collection and you will be able to see your text appear at the bottom of your Shopify site and see your SEO improving little by little.
