How is the Shopify invoice calculated?

If you have a Shopify store, you receive a monthly invoice from Shopify. This invoice, which represents a portion of the Shopify rate , covers all the costs associated with using Shopify: the license, server fees, maintenance, research and development, applications, etc.

But how is Shopify's invoice calculated?

Let's look at this in detail.

Basic Shopify Pricing

Shopify is a subscription-based solution that has 4 different plans (plus a fifth for the Indian market only). Depending on the plan you choose, Shopify will charge you the subscription amount every month.

Currently, Shopify has 4 plans:

  • Shopify Basic at $29/month
  • Shopify at $79/month
  • Shopify Advanced at $299/month
  • Shopify plus at $2,000/month if your revenue is less than $800,000/month

Shopify Plus is only available through a Shopify Plus Expert or Shopify Plus Live Services request. It cannot be subscribed to online.

Commission Billing

In addition to your base plan, Shopify will charge commissions on sales generated on your e-commerce site that did not go through Shopify Payments .

As Shopify Payments is not currently available in France, commissions are calculated on your entire turnover including VAT and deliveries!

Here is the exact formula for calculating commissions:

( (Total product price - discounts) + taxes + delivery charges) x Commission rate

As a reminder, here are the commission rates:

  • Shopify Basic: 2%
  • Shopify at 1%
  • Shopify Advanced at 0.5%
  • Shopify plus at 0.25% if your turnover is greater than $800,000/month

For example, if you have a Shopify plan and you do:

  • €23,000 in sales (excluding VAT) this month
  • €1000 discount
  • €4,000 in taxes
  • €800 delivery charge

Then the price of the commissions will be:

((23,000 - 1000) + 4000 + 800) * 0.02 = €536 for this month.

You can replace the amounts with your own figures or use our Shopify pricing calculator

Shopify Payments Commissions

If you are located in a country other than France and you use Shopify Payments, then you will have fees on payments collected by Shopify . These fees also vary depending on your plan and the type of payment (online or “in person”).

The full schedule is available on the Shopify website and is broken down into a fixed amount and a variable amount. These amounts are equivalent to transaction fees. You therefore do not have any additional bank fees such as “credit card fees”. It's a bit like Stripe or Paypal fees.

For online payments:

  • Shopify Basic: 2.9% + 30 cents
  • Shopify: 2.6% + 30 cents
  • Shopify Advanced: 2.4% + 30 cents

For “in store” type payments

  • Shopify Basic: 2.7% + 0 cents
  • Shopify at 2.5% + 0 cents
  • Shopify Advanced at 2.4% + 0 cents

These fees may seem high to a French person, but bank fees are often higher in the United States! They are therefore competitive on the US market.

App Prices

App pricing will also add to the bill. Shopify allows apps to charge you on a fixed or recurring basis.

Rest assured, only the store owner can authorize new apps to charge you. It's therefore important not to lose the store owner's access and not to entrust it to a passing intern!

With each new paid app, you'll be asked for confirmation to authorize the app to charge you. So, there's no risk of your bill skyrocketing without warning.

payment validation before installing an app

The total amount Shopify charges for this will depend on the number of apps you use on your site and their pricing. Each app may offer its own pricing.

It's up to you to decide whether the cost of the application is justified in relation to your needs.

Total invoice

All of these elements therefore make up the overall Shopify invoice that will arrive each month. For all of our customers, the elements constituting the Shopify invoice remain much lower than the fees they previously paid with Magento or Prestashop .

Indeed, at Shopify, there is no need for a server, TMA (third-party application maintenance), update costs, debugging or anything else.

Once the site is delivered, everything works and stays up to date!
