Everything you need to know about the Shopify Sitemap

Do you need a sitemap for your Shopify site ? A sitemap is an essential element of any good SEO to boost your Shopify store .

So if you too want to increase the SEO visits to your e-commerce site, it's time to understand and use the sitemap in your Shopify e-commerce site.

Shopify XML sitemap

What is an XML sitemap for Shopify?

A sitemap is a small text file in XML format. XML is just a special organization of text so that machines can read, understand, and take it into account.

The sitemap will list all the pages of your Shopify e-commerce site so that search engine robots like Google can find your pages.

It's a kind of exhaustive directory of your entire site. A bit like creating an index of all the pages so you can find them quickly.

The Shopify sitemap also contains some information about your pages, such as the date of the last update. This is why it's important to regularly add content to your pages.

Your Shopify sitemap will also rank pages by importance. Root pages like categories or the homepage will be considered more important than T&C pages, for example.

All of this is framed by tags and a very specific format so that all robots can understand your sitemap file.

What does a Shopify sitemap look like?

A Shopify XML sitemap file looks like this:

It's in text format but organized in a precise and rigorous way and above all automatically generated by Shopify. No need to edit the file by hand, everything is automatic.

More precisely, the screenshot above represents a “listing” of the different sitemaps that Shopify will create.

A real sitemap file looks more like this:

You see it's pretty much the same and it lists the URLs of your site.

How to get your Shopify sitemap?

That's great! You don't need an app because Shopify creates a default sitemap itself when you create a Shopify site . It can be accessed by adding “/sitemap.xml” to the end of your site.

For example :

https://pikka.fr/sitemap.xml

What to do with your Shopify Sitemap?

Once you have your sitemap, you need to go to Google Search Console to add it.

In the sitemap tab, simply copy the URL of your global sitemap (yoursite.com/sitemap.xml) and click “submit”.

Google search console

Google's robots will read your file within a few hours and add the URLs to their database if they were not already present.

Congratulations, you've just completed one of the essential steps to successful SEO for your Shopify site. If you want to continue generating traffic, you can contact one of our Shopify SEO experts to boost your online store.
