Prestashop 8, already end of life?

If you follow e-commerce news, you know that PrestaShop remains a very popular e-commerce solution in France. Even though the solution has been in decline for several years, as shown in the graph below on Google Trends, the solution continues to evolve regularly.

Precisely, version 8, launched at the beginning of 2023, has evolved well with several updates (up to 8.2.x). However, since July 4, 2025 , it has switched to the extended support phase — a status that changes its nature and announces the end of Prestashop 8. Let's see together what this means for merchants.

🔍 What does "end of extended support for Prestashop 8" mean?

Behind this somewhat barbaric term lies a very simple notion: no more functional updates will be made to PrestaShop 8.

Which implies two things:

  • The 8.2.x branch (with the most recent version 8.2.1) is now exclusively maintained for critical bugs, security vulnerabilities or essential hooks . No new features are planned.

  • This limited support will continue until PrestaShop 10.0 is released. However, once version 10 is released, branch 8 will be permanently discontinued.

If you are on Prestashop 8, then there is no immediate security risk even if there remains the question of support for PHP 8.1 which is also end of life.

Also end of support for PHP 8.1

Because Prestashop runs on servers, which you manage, with or without the help of a host and an IT manager.

Prestashop uses the PHP technical stack to execute its code but the main problem is that the version of PHP used for Prestashop 8 is also at the end of its life.

PrestaShop 8 is not compatible with PHP versions higher than 8.1 (source official PrestaShop website), except that the PHP 8.1 version has been end of life for more than 18 months already.

Is PHP's end of life a concern for e-commerce retailers?

Yes and No, Yes it is a concern because it makes the technical stack aging and will require resources for you in order to migrate and/or change E-commerce platform .

However, with security updates being made, we are in an area where even a "0 day" flaw (discovered) would not pose a problem IF you patch your PHP server AND your Prestashop with the fixes, which let's be honest is not always done. There are still PrestaShop 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 and even 1.7 in the wild despite their significant obsolescence.

âś… Context and perspective

  • Version 8 was a necessary update to continue offering a reliable version (updated PHP version) and obviously a secure version. We hope that you are no longer on Prestahsop 1.7 (or worse) since then!

  • Several fixes and improvements have been made via versions 8.1 and 8.2, including the addition of new hooks in version 8.2.2 or adjustments for front-office, API or back-office modules

  • Version 9.0 has been available since June 2025, with a new technical base (Symfony 6.4, PHP compatibility > 8.1) and renewed features

  • Version 10.00 will be released shortly, although details are still unclear regarding the technical scope, advantages/constraints, and timescales for version 10 to be available.

đź“‹ Life Cycle Summary

Version Current status (July 2025) Planned support
PrestaShop 8.2.x Extended Support – only security & critical bugs Until the release of PrestaShop 10.0
PrestaShop 9.x Active support – fixes, regressions, security Up to and including version 9.1.0
PrestaShop 10 Future Will replace PrestaShop 8.x

What to do if you are on PrestaShop 8?

If everything works well and you don't plan any upgrades

You can stay on 8.2.x until the end of extended support (planned for the release of version 10), with only critical patches if necessary. However, it is important to budget now for:

  • Patch your e-commerce solution with the latest fixes
  • Patch your server with the latest fixes
  • Migrate your platform to a new version or an alternative inE-commerce CMS

If you are planning to develop your store or integrate new modules

If you want to invest and continue to grow, there are two approaches:

  • It may be worth migrating to PrestaShop 9.x , which has a more active support schedule and new features, or waiting for PrestaShop 10.
  • It is also possible to migrate from Prestashop to Shopify to benefit from a cloud ecosystem and no longer have to make updates.

If you are starting a new project

It is better to go directly to PrestaShop 9.x (or compare with other options like Shopify, WooCommerce): to ensure longevity and technical modernity.

Prestashop 8 is coming to an end soon, but not yet a sudden shutdown

PrestaShop 8 isn't completely obsolete yet, and the situation isn't as dire for Magento 1.9 . This version remains stable, in use, and maintained—but without new features. For current users, this move to "extended support" should be seen as a signal of change rather than an immediate warning.
