Replacing Magento with Shopify, the right idea?

Have you been using Magento for several years but need to explore another e-commerce solution? Would you like to know if switching to Shopify might be a good idea? If you're not too familiar with Shopify's capabilities, then you've come to the right place!

Find out why many e-commerce merchants are migrating from Magento to Shopify to reduce maintenance costs, speed up their teams' work, and grow their e-commerce sites.

Magento. It was better before.

You may have also noticed that Magento was the star of e-commerce solutions for many years. It's no surprise that it's an extremely powerful tool for creating e-shops, and its technical openness has allowed it to be connected to ERPs, WMSs, or PIMs, making it the number one e-commerce tool for retailers and large e-commerce SMEs .

But then, if with all these qualities Magento has established itself as the number 1 solution, why change it?

Magento no longer represents the state of the art in e-commerce

Well, it's been many years since Magento was launched and for a while now, the machine has not been as dynamic and Magento no longer represents the state of the art in E-commerce.

Rest assured, your site will continue to work for a while and your technical team or Magento agency will certainly continue to maintain it for a long time.

But we all know that in an ultra-competitive e-commerce environment, it is necessary to have the best tools and options at your disposal. Today, it would be unimaginable not to include Shopify or Shopify Plus in your scope of study when redesigning your e-commerce site.

Magento 2, a false good idea?

But before choosing another e-commerce solution, perhaps you have already asked yourself the question of Magento 2. Magento 2 was for a long time the myth of e-commerce. Not only was it delayed for several years, but in the end, for a result, shall we say, useless? In any case, very far from being the best e-commerce platform .

As is often the case, Magento 2 has prioritized the technical brick to the detriment of its functionality, usability, performance, and above all, productivity. I experienced it too, but I didn't know there was an alternative.

But what also works against Magento 2 is its exorbitant price .

The company was subsequently acquired by Adobe for over a billion dollars. 1.68 billion dollars to be exact in May 2020. That's just over two years ago.

But this acquisition was a no-brainer for Adobe. Transforming a software company into a cloud service has indeed become one of Adobe's strengths. Why not do the same in e-commerce?

But to successfully implement this change, Magento implemented a price increase that wasn't always discreet. Some merchants were offered quotes ranging from $15,000 to over $90,000 per year for the same functional scope. This is heresy, given that there has never been so much competition in web and e-commerce tools.

Magento was a great solution for creating e-commerce sites. I know, I was a Magento user for years. But today, whether it's Magento 1 or 2, there are more powerful solutions for less money. Here's a demonstration.

Switch to Shopify to ease your budget.

Let's take as an example a site with a turnover of 12 million euros. It's a Magento site (one or two) which is under Magento enterprise will therefore pay between 15,000 and 90,000 € for an annual license with Magento plus hosting plus significant maintenance with its agency plus a significant mental load concerning security, technology and updates. All this for a functional scope which is starting to date.

So we're talking about an operating cost of between 100,000 and 200,000 excluding the cost of creating the e-commerce site. And we know that a Magento site can't be created in two minutes but can take between 6 and 8 months of project time from your agency and your team.

a potential saving of 6 months of work and a budget between 70% and 85% reduction on your software bill

On the other hand, a Shopify site of the same level can be created in a month or two and have an operating budget of around €30,000 per year including the Shopify Plus license for one year + commissions. You can consult my article “ How much does a Shopify Plus project actually cost ” for the details of the calculation.

We are therefore talking about a potential saving of 6 months of work and a budget of between 70% and 85% reduction on your software bill.

Yes, if an agency told you that Shopify was more expensive because it's SaaS, they lied to you. Or they don't know. This is common. There are no hosting fees, technical maintenance, or updates to do on Shopify.

99% of your technical budget will be dedicated to functional upgrades, which will be beneficial for your website and your productivity. Managing traffic spikes during sales? No worries, and at no extra cost. A TV appearance? No more risk of your website blackout or server overload.

Shopify Plus is therefore a very economical, multi-channel and high-performance solution for players who want to try something other than Magento.

For your information, Shopify and Shopify Plus are based on the same technology. It is therefore entirely possible to upgrade to Shopify with the Advanced plan and switch to Shopify Plus (in 24 hours) a little later.

How much does a migration from Magento to Shopify cost?

The annual license is often more economical, that's for sure, but it's not the only cost of Shopify. Besides the annual license, you must of course factor in the migration cost and the cost of creating the site.

Budgets vary greatly from one site to another, of course, but here are some general price ranges. Please note: this is not a firm, definitive commitment! Ask us for a personalized quote and we will be happy to analyze your specific situation.

  • Cost of creating a Shopify site: between €15,000 and €50,000
  • Migration cost: depends on the volume of data but also between €15,000 and €30,000

A Magento site that wants to migrate to Shopify will therefore have to pay between €30,000 and €100,000. This depends on the number of sites, the number of languages, the number of products, orders, etc.

These are broad ideas, but you can see that it is possible to save money on the cost of owning your e-commerce site even in year 1 by switching from Magento to Shopify.

Your teams will also benefit from a modern, fast, efficient and effective tool to carry out their merchant work to the best of their ability!

5 Benefits of Replacing Magento with Shopify

If you're not convinced, you can read our article " Why Switch to Shopify " or check out the 5 reasons our customers most often cite as benefits of switching to Shopify below.

Increase productivity

With its more modern ergonomics (Magento's interface is more than 10 years old!), Shopify allows e-commerce teams to gain productivity in their work. Add a product sheet, upload images, modify a menu, add banners, prepare sales, etc. So many advantages of Shopify compared to Magento.

These optimizations allow you to better manage your site and have time to analyze data and simply create more value for your e-shop.

Focus on the right topics

Have you ever had a site-wide bug while updating a simple plugin on Magento? Well, that kind of thing doesn't happen with Shopify. Each application is compartmentalized and won't crash your site.

Removing these kinds of worries allows you to stay focused on what really matters: how to sell more and optimize your e-commerce site. Unless your passion is fixing technical bugs, none of our clients want to go back to managing things that have little added value for them.

Benefit from a global ecosystem

With thousands of apps and many country-specific ones, Shopify boasts one of the most beautiful tech ecosystems in the world.

Looking for an SEO specialist in Poland? No problem, you can find one to help your store in just a few clicks.

A developer in South America to better connect with the local market? Same here, it will only take a few minutes (take into account the time difference though).

A truly multi-channel system

You're familiar with many merchant solutions that claim to be multichannel. But how much does it cost you? With Shopify, integrating a POS (point of sale) is free. AND instant. Yes, really. Do you have an iPad? Add the POS app, enter your Shopify ID, and you have a connected store.

All this can be done from the back office in just a few clicks. It's ideal for digitizing a store, setting up a pop-up store, or selling at a special event.
