Who dominates the e-commerce CMS sector in France?

As you most certainly know, there are many solutions and software to create your e-commerce site . The modes evolve and the software also as well as their fame and their interest.

At Pikka, we are a fan of Shopify but it is far from being the only solution on the market and fortunately! Competition is good for merchants but also for solutions in order to always bring more value to merchants.

But what is the most requested e-commerce solution in France? If you too are asking yourself the question, then read on!

What are the most sought-after e-commerce solutions in France?

As we don't have the list of downloads and stores, we will use Google Trends data to see a bit of the fashionable solutions and the ones that are said to be less requested. And if you ever can't choose, you can always read our article: how to choose your e-commerce solution in 5 minutes .

Here is the list of solutions we have studied and compared:

  • Shopify
  • bigcartel
  • jimdo
  • Magento
  • shopfactory
  • Boutikone
  • Intershop
  • Solusquare
  • gold trade
  • Wizishop
  • 42stores
  • Oxatis
  • Oasis-trade
  • Shop-application
  • PrestaShop
  • Drupal commerce
  • woocommerce
  • opencart
  • Oxid-esales
  • Salesforce Commerce Cloud
  • Rentashop
  • big commerce
  • Kiubi
  • Wix
  • Weezbe
  • SAP Commerce Cloud
  • Proximity
  • wshop

We have ruled out the Octave e-commerce solution because it is extremely difficult to retrieve information without including the notion of music octave. The results were therefore not consistent or relevant.

Note on Google Trends before we start:

Google trends does not give precise figures on the volume of searches but rather gives elements of comparison. For example, if a piece of software is at 100 and another at 10, then we can say that one is 10 times more sought after than the other. But the exact volume remains unknown.

Top 5 e-commerce solutions.

Let's start directly with the top of the most sought-after E-commerce CMS in France.

Shopify Wix Magento Prestashop Woocommerce

As we can see on the graph above, there is a real evolution in CMS requests since 2004, source of the first information from Google Trends.

Magento was briefly the leader to be caught up by Prestashop which was overtaken by Wix then by Shopify to finally land on a mix of solutions.

Woocommerce is currently the last of this top 5 but its case is a bit specific, we'll talk about it just below.

In short, casually it is a small piece of French e-commerce history that can be seen in this beautiful chronological frieze of e-commerce.

Of course nothing is decided and we can see that each of the solutions can still raise the bar to take the lead.

The Woocommerce X Wordpress case

Let's talk about Woocommerce for a moment. It is a plugin for Wordpress and if we had included Wordpress in the list it would be number 1 all the time as you can see from the graph below.

Shopify Wordpress Magento Wix Prestahsop

So should we talk about WordPress? of Woocommerce? Add both? See what you prefer.

And if not for other e-commerce solutions?

In order to see some data and be able to compare, we have kept a common repository to see more clearly. By choosing Magento (the last of our previous graph) we can see that it is still very superior to other solutions.

Magento Oxatis Wizishop Opencart BigCommerce

In the example below we are talking about Wizishop, Oxatis, BigCommerce, Opencart but apart from Oxatis, the others do not really stand out on the “demand” side.

Note that the “merger” between Oxatis and BigCommerce has not, for the moment, brought a big spotlight to BigCommerce.

If we continue to go down a little further in the ranking, we can see certain players like Shopfactory, which no longer seems to be successful for a few years. As it is a “zoom” we can see the rise of Bigcommerce a little more clearly this time!

Shopfactory Intershop Solusquare BigCommerce Opencart

The rest of the ranking is more complicated to do due to a lack of data volume, but all the other e-commerce solutions are at best around the volumes of Intershop or Shopfactory. That is to say about fifty to a hundred times less searched than a Shopify.

What conclusions can be drawn from this top E-commerce software?

It is always interesting to see the dynamics of the e-commerce solution chosen to create its merchant site. Is it growing? In loss? Is it fashionable or a little forgotten?

With Google Trends, far from judging the qualities and defects of an e-commerce solution, we can at least see which solution is fashionable and which are slowly being forgotten!

If you like the exercise more, don't hesitate to suggest comparisons in the comments (between CMS "content?) or with other e-commerce solutions that we haven't talked about.
